Tsavo East

Famous red elephants & endless open plains

Why clients love Tsavo East

Kenya's largest park and the easiest big safari from the coast. Tsavo East's elephants dust themselves red-brown, lions roam the Yatta Plateau and the Galana River brings hippos, crocodiles and Lugard Falls. The wide, open landscape makes for superb photography — and it's a doable day trip from Mombasa, Diani and Watamu.

Things to do here

  • Red-dust elephants — the park's signature sight
  • Galana River hippos & crocodiles at Lugard Falls
  • Mudanda Rock waterhole with large elephant herds
  • Lions, buffalo, giraffe, Grevy's zebra and over 500 bird species

Common questions

Can I do Tsavo East as a day trip from the coast?

Yes — our 1-day Tsavo East safari leaves very early from Mombasa, Diani or Watamu and returns by evening. For a more relaxed trip we recommend staying a night or two.

Will we see the Big Five?

Tsavo East is home to lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard, plus the rare black rhino in a few areas. Sightings are never guaranteed, but elephants and giraffe are almost certain.
